When Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX came to Switch last year, boasting an all new painterly art style and refined gameplay loop that catapulted it up alongside its 2020 contemporaries, people all over the world were stunned. Still, I reckon most Pokemon fans will - or at least should - agree with the fact that Mystery DungeonвЂ™s stories are justвЂ¦ better. Without going from Town A to Town B to Town C, how are you supposed to slowly build a decent team and take down the Elite Four in a climactic final showdown? I mean, there are rom hacks out there that prove a more conventionally open RPG structure works remarkably well in the mainline games, but whatever. IвЂ™m not dissing the core games, mind - itвЂ™s just that the narratives are remarkably linear by necessity. 12 years on, IвЂ™m still not quite sure why it hasnвЂ™t been remade - I reckon it needs a Switch port more so than Diamond & Pearl.ДЄ few weeks ago, I wrote about how Mystery Dungeon proves that Pokemon is capable of telling compelling stories. Originally launched in 2009, itвЂ™s the definitive edition of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, serving as the typical third generational instalment usually seen in the mainline series.

Explorers looks like it'll be a hit with series fans, but probably won't do anything to change the hearts and minds of the non-Poke-addicts of the world.Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is an outstanding Pokemon game.

And, of course, the shift to the DS has resulted in a graphical upgrade from the last version. This should make the wait for someone to come save your fallen body much shorter. In addition, you can now send out rescue requests via Nintendo Wi-Fi and you can now get rescue requests sent to you via email or even text messages. New to this iteration of the series is a Criminal Board, a listing of outlaw Pokemon who you can hunt down for rewards. That's a nice way to up the ante on collecting from the 490 available Pokemon. Once they do that, though, you have to lead them safely out of whatever dungeon you're in. Part of the draw of Mystery Dungeon is collecting Pokemon, which you do by defeating enemies and hoping they'll ask to join your team. You can, however, create linked moves from the four moves your Pokemon have, letting you execute several moves at the cost of one action. The combat is turn-based, with every action you take (including a single step) giving every other creature in the dungeon you're exploring an action. The gameplay of the Mystery Dungeon series is classic roguealike, where you head out from town into randomized dungeons to level-up, loot, and try to survive (since death carries grievous penalties).

To insure that one bad encounter doesn't wipe both you and your permanent companion character out, the two of you can't be the same type - your type is removed from the list of selectable companions. Your replies to these vaguely new-age-style personality questions determine which Pokemon you'll be, and also determine what type of Pokemon your companion won't be. There are over fifty questions that are randomly posed, each with three answers to choose from.

To help determine what kind of Pokemon you'll spend the whole game as, you start off with a personality quiz. Landing on a mysterious island, you wake up to find yourself a Pokemon, with no memory of how you arrived. Explorers is no different, with you starting the game as a human being washed overboard in a storm. The main allure of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, as opposed to the traditional Pokemon RPG series, is that you actually play as a Pokemon, not one of their trainers. At Nintendo's Media Summit event last week, we got to see and get some hands-on time with the newest of the Mystery Dungeons, and they're looking good - if quite familiar. At this age, we're impressed to see it jump so smoothly onto the DS with Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series is, at this point, venerable.
